Bucks tie series with 107-96 Game 4 win as Nets lose Irving
UNDATED (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 34 points and the Milwaukee Bucks rolled to a 107-96 Game 4 victory on Sunday to tie their second-round playoff series with the Brooklyn Nets.
The Nets lost Kyrie Irving to a sprained right ankle midway through the second quarter. The Bucks erased a 2-0 deficit in this best-of-7 series by winning two straight in Milwaukee.
Game 5 is Tuesday night at Brooklyn. Kevin Durant had 28 points and 13 rebounds for the Nets.
Later today, the Suns and Nuggets meet in Denver tonight with the Nuggets facing a daunting 3-0 deficit in their series.
The Nuggets are the 143rd NBA team to lose the first three games of a best-of-seven playoff series. No team has ever recovered from three games down to win four in a row.
The Nuggets say their only focus is on sending the series back to Phoenix with a win in Game 4. If they lose, Nikola Jokic will become the first MVP to get swept in a playoff series since the NBA went to the best-of-seven format for all series in 2003.

Semyon Varlamov, Islanders beat Lightning 2-1 in Game 1
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Semyon Varlamov (SEHM’-yahn vahr-LAH’-mahv) made 30 saves and the New York Islanders got goals from Mathew Barzal and Ryan Pulock to beat the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 on Sunday in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup semifinals.
Varlamov won his fourth straight playoff start, joining teammate Ilya Sorokin (sah-ROH’-kihn) as only the third pair of goaltenders from the same team to have personal winning streaks of at least four games in a single postseason.
Sorokin won four in a row during New York’s first-round victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Varlamov won four games in the second round, including the final three as the Islanders rallied to eliminate the Boston Bruins.

Tatis’ tiebreaking slam in 7th sends Padres past Mets 7-3
UNDATED (AP) — Fernando Tatis (tah-TEES’) Jr. hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the seventh inning and Manny Machado (mah-CHAH’-doh) followed with a home run as San Diego’s high-priced superstars powered the Padres past the New York Mets 7-3 to stop a four-game slide.
Chris Paddack struck out nine over six strong innings in his first win since May 21 and Tommy Pham launched a leadoff homer to help San Diego prevent a weekend sweep despite grounding into four double plays.
José Peraza put the Mets ahead 2-1 with a two-run homer in the fifth.
Around the majors today:
— Carlos Rodón took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and the Chicago White Sox completed a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers with a 4-1 win. Rodón was going for his second no-hitter of the season. He took a perfect game into the ninth inning against the Cleveland Indians on April 14, hitting a batter with one out before finishing the no-no. Eric Haase doubled with one out in the seventh on Sunday. Rodón finished the inning, allowing one run on one hit and two walks while striking out nine. Evan Marshall and Liam Hendriks completed the one-hitter, with Hendriks getting his AL-leading 17th save.
— Avisaíl García hit a two-run homer, Christian Yelich added a pinch-hit sacrifice fly on his bobblehead day and the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 5-2 win. Despite getting outhit 10-5, Milwaukee won for the 14th time in 16 games, including seven in a row at home. The Pirates have lost seven straight. They were swept in back-to-back series after losing three at home against the Dodgers before heading to Milwaukee. Brent Suter picked up the win, getting the final out in the sixth. Josh Hader struck out the side in the ninth for his 17th save in as many chances.
—Teoscar Hernández belted a pair of three-run homers over the Green Monster, two of the Toronto Blue Jays’ eight homers in an 18-4 rout of the Boston Red Sox. Toronto’s Marcus Semien extended his road hitting streak to 26 games. Vladimir Guerrero (guh-REHR’-oh) Jr., Bo Bichette (bih-SHEHT’), Lourdes Gurriel (gur-ee-EHL’) Jr., Cavan Biggio (BIH’-zhee-oh), Rowdy Tellez and Semien also went deep for the Blue Jays, a day after they belted five homers in a 7-2 victory. Guerrero’s was his major league-leading 21st. Robbie Ray got the win, allowing three runs in six innings. Xander Bogaerts (ZAN’-dur BOH’-gahrtz) and Bobby Dalbec homered for Boston.
— Randy Arozarena hit his first career grand slam, Tampa Bay relievers threw seven no-hit innings, and the Rays handed the Baltimore Orioles their 15th consecutive road loss with a 7-1 win. The Orioles extended a dubious team record, the worst road skid since the club moved from St. Louis to Baltimore in 1954. Arozarena made it 7-1 when he stopped a personal 19-game home run drought on his drive to center off César Valdez in the seventh. After opener Michael Wacha allowed one run and two hits, Josh Fleming entered in the third and pitched four innings. Matt Wisler, Andrew Kittredge and Jeffrey Springs all worked one perfect inning.
— Kyle Schwarber became the sixth player in the history of the Washington Nationals and Montreal Expos franchise to homer in both the first and second innings, driving in four runs in a 5-0 win over the San Francisco Giants. Joe Ross allowed five hits in eight innings as the Nationals gained a four-game split. Schwarber had his seventh career leadoff homer, his second in as many days, and hit a three-run drive in the second off Johnny Cueto (KWAY’-toh) for a 4-0 lead.
— Michael Brantley had his second four-hit game of the series and drove in four runs, and the Houston Astros had a season-high 20 hits and routed Minnesota 14-3 to take two of three from the Twins. Minnesota’s Michael Pineda left after four innings due to a reoccurrence of right forearm soreness that first bothered him June 1. In his second start since returning, he allowed three runs and six hits — raising his totals to 10 runs over 11 1/3 innings in his last three starts.
— Eugenio Suárez hit an early two-run homer and the surging Cincinnati Reds climbed back over .500 for the first time since April 21, beating the Colorado Rockies 6-2. The Reds have won 10 of their last 13, including three straight over the Rockies. It was the Reds’ first sweep of Colorado in Cincinnati since 2006. Tony Santillan, recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday to make his major league debut while filling in for injured Sonny Gray, fell one out short of qualifying for the win. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed one run on five hits and four walks in 4 2-3 innings. The Rockies have lost four in a row.
— Aaron Nola allowed three hits and struck out nine, leading Philadelphia over the New York Yankees 7-0 for a two-game sweep that moved the Phillies back over .500. Odubel Herrera, Jean Segura and J.T. Realmuto combined to go 7 for 13 with a double, a triple, four runs scored and five RBIs. Philadelphia has won four straight games and three straight series, giving the Phillies a winning record for the first time since they were 22-21 before play on May 20.
— Austin Riley homered and drove in three runs, Drew Smyly gave up two runs over five innings on his 32nd birthday and the Atlanta Braves snapped a four-game slide by beating the Miami Marlins 6-4. Ender Inciarte also homered for Atlanta after he entered the game as an injury replacement for Ronald Acuña Jr. Starling Marte drove in three runs for the Marlins, who were bidding for their first sweep of Atlanta since 2016.
— Jake Fraley homered off AL Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber after replacing the injured Mitch Haniger, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians 6-2. Haniger fouled a pitch off his left knee and had to be helped from the field in the first inning. The Mariners later said the injury was a bruise. Haniger leads Seattle in homers and RBIs. Fraley’s two-run homer in the fourth pushed Seattle’s lead to 5-0. Bieber gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings. Logan Gilbert outpitched Cleveland’s ace, allowing one run and four hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Indians send McKenzie back to minors after wild outing
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have optioned Triston McKenzie to Triple-A Columbus for the fourth time this season.
The right-hander failed to get out of the first inning Saturday against Seattle. McKenzie had been called up from the Columbus before the game. He issued four walks, including one with the bases loaded, and retired two of the six batters he faced.
McKenzie began the season in the rotation. He is 1-3 with a 6.38 ERA in 11 games and leads the AL with 39 walks.

— Steven Matz was placed on the COVID-related injured list by the Toronto Blue Jays before a game against Boston, one day after the left-hander beat the Red Sox. Matz allowed one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings on Saturday. Right-hander Jeremy Beasley was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo, a day after he was optioned.

Djokovic rallies for his 2nd French Open title
PARIS (AP) — Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch) has won his second French Open championship and his 19th Grand Slam title.
Djokovic rallied past Stefanos Tsitsipas in a seesaw final at Roland Garros. The score was 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. Djokovic also erased a two-set deficit to win in the fourth round, and has done it six times in his career.
The 22-year-old Tsitsipas looked like the fresher player early on, and Djokovic was coming off an epic semifinal victory over Rafael Nadal. But the 34-year-old Serb found his form and held every service game in the final three sets.
Meanwhile, Barbora Krejcikova (kreh-jih-KOH’-vah) has completed a titles sweep at Roland Garros. Playing with fellow Cezch player Katerina Siniakova, they won the doubles final 6-4, 6-2 Sunday against Bethanie Mattek-Sands of the United States and Iga Swiatek of Poland.
Krejcikova also won the singles title in Paris. She is the first woman since Mary Pierce in 2000 to complete the singles-doubles titles sweep at Roland Garros.

Jerry Kelly successfully defends hometown Champions title
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Jerry Kelly successfully defended his title in his hometown American Insurance Championship, closing with a 6-under 66 for a one-stroke victory over Fred Couples and Miguel Angel Jimenez.
The 54-year-old Kelly finished at 14-under 202 at University Ridge for his eighth PGA Tour Champions victory.
Couples bogeyed the par-5 18th for a 68. The 61-year-old Couples won the 2017 tournament for the last of his 13 senior titles.
Jimenez, the leader after each of the first two rounds, shot a 69.

South Africa’s Higgo wins Palmetto Championship at Congaree
RIDGELAND, S.C. (AP) — South Africa’s Garrick Higgo won the Palmetto Championship at Congaree for his first PGA Tour victory Sunday when leader Chesson Hadley made bogeys on his final three holes to lose his two-shot lead. The 22-year-old Higgo was making just his second tour start. He was keeping warm on the practice range when Hadley missed a 10-footer for par on the 72nd hole that would’ve forced a playoff. Higgo took off his sunglasses, smiled and hugged his caddie when told that he’d won in just his career tour start.

Dolphins, LB Baker agree on 3-year, $39 million extension
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins and linebacker Jerome Baker have agreed on a three-year, $39 million contract extension.
Agent Drew Rosenhaus says the deal includes $28.4 million in guaranteed money.
Baker has played in all 48 games in his first three seasons with the Dolphins and started 37 of them. He led the Dolphins in tackles in each of the past two seasons and had a career-best seven sacks in 2020. The Dolphins took the former Ohio State standout in the third round of the 2018 draft.

Pato O’Ward charges to win, dedicates it to injured teammate
DETROIT (AP) — Pato O’Ward has become IndyCar’s first repeat winner of the season by charging through the field on a final restart to steal the victory away from Josef Newgarden at the Raceway at Belle Isle Park.
O’Ward drove from fifth to first in five laps to win his second race of the season.
O’Ward dedicated the win to Arrow McLaren SP teammate Felix Rosenqvist, who was hospitalized overnight following his crash in Saturday’s first race of the doubleheader.
Newgarden finished second after leading 67 of the 70 laps. Alex Palou was third but lost the points lead to O’Ward.
