Market District Injecting Life To Downtown Montgomery

And with a swing of the hammer, the mayor started work on the latest addition to lower Dexter called the Market District.

The city is partnering with Foshee Management to create a new market district from the Irish Bred Pub all the way down to the Court Street fountain.

“This is not the culmination but another step in the process of the whole revitalization of downtown. We’ve done a lot of work on Commerce Street now we’re moving on to Dexter Avenue. This is a project that about three years ago we started when be bought a lot of this property,” said Mayor Strange.

This first step is the start of new lofts inside 36 dexter avenue. But that’s just the beginning. Foshee management says they are hoping to bring restaurants and other businesses to the area, and even add a bowling alley.

“This is something that we’ve seen that’s been missing here for a very long time. We’re real attracted to the history of montgomery and how it was two cities, two towns at one time and this was the dividing line,” said Foshee Management President Golson Foshee.

People in town are excited about the idea, but hope they preserve that history as well.

“We need to keep a little bit of the old tradition along with the new. The new buildings are nice, but we need to keep, like the Dexter Church, we need to remember this is old Montgomery. This is the south,” said resident Carl Jones.

“I think it would be a really good idea. We’d need more parking down in the area. But I’ve seen it so many years when it’s been really bad downtown and it’s good to see it improving and growing,” said resident Elizabeth Corley.
