Surveillance Cameras to be Installed at Tutwiler Prison

State prisons officials are adding surveillance cameras and working to increase inmate privacy at Tutwiler prison in Elmore county.

A report by the U.S. Department of Justice said the prison was not suited for housing female offenders because there was little privacy for inmates to shower and use the bathroom.

It also showed there were numerous blind spots that could make it possible for sexual activity to go undetected.

Officials say they will find ways to improve inmates’ privacy in bathrooms without sacrificing security.

They also say other improvements have been made since the report was released.
