Witness Describes 2011 Community College Shooting

A woman has described for jurors how her estranged husband pulled alongside a family van and started shooting at Southern Union State Community College in Opelika.

Bethany Watson Mitchell was the first witness Monday in the capital murder trial of 37-year-old Thomas Franklin May III.

Mitchell says her mother, Brenda Watson; her grandmother, Maude Ethell Marshall; and her 4-year-old daughter were picking her up from classes on the day of the shooting in 2011.

She says May pulled beside the van and started shooting out a window.

Mitchell’s mother was killed, and Mitchell and her grandmother were wounded. Her daughter was cut by flying glass.

May says he’s not guilty by reason of mental problems. The man faces a potential death penalty if convicted.
