Legislators Say No Funds for Teacher Pay Raise

Governor Bentley says he wants to give teachers a 2 percent pay raise.
But not all lawmakers are supporting it.

We talked to republican legislators about why they don’t support the governor and the teacher pay raise.
Senator Dick Brewbaker tells us it’s not about not supporting teachers.
There just isn’t enough money in the budget.

“We would love to do everything for everybody, but we also have to budget responsibly. If we did a 2 percent pay raise and pay the debt back, and fully funded PHIP , what you would have is a budget that would be prorated the first day of the next fiscal year. Nobody wants that,” said Brewbaker.

The Senate has already voted on its education budget.
The House is expected to vote Tuesday.
