Pike County Getting An Animal Shelter

Pike County is final getting an animal shelter.Â
Â
Right now there are only 16 kennels in a shelter run by the Troy police department.Â
Â
Two private groups have been working on raising money for a new shelter. But Wednesday, Troy Mayor Jason Reeves announced these two groups–the Troy Animal Shelter Coalition and the Humane Society of Pike County- are joining the City of Troy, Brundidge and Pike County to make it a reality.Â
Â
The two groups have already come up with close to $300,000 and land on Henderson Highway was donated for the site. It will house cats and dogs, some residents say it is much needed.Â
Â
Tiffany Howington said, “Hopefully with this new shelter there will be a lot more adopters because it will be easy to go down and adopt from the shelter. Instead of going through the police department.”
Â
The different groups will form an organization and work on concrete construction plans for the shelter and dog park. They hope to break ground by the end of this year.Â
