Lawyer: Ala. Could Name Execution Drug Suppliers

A lawyer for a death row inmate says Alabama is free to disclose the suppliers of its lethal injection drugs, and is wrong to cite her client’s case as a reason not to do so.

Alabama Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas on Thursday denied a records request for the names of the drug suppliers. Thomas said he couldn’t give out the information citing a confidentiality order in a lawsuit filed by death row inmate Thomas Arthur.

Arthur’s lawyer Suhana Han issued a statement disputing the state’s position. She said Alabama is free to release the information.

Han said the order only covers information uncovered in litigation, and the state has refused to turn over the names.

Arthur is challenging the state’s lethal injection drug protocol as potentially cruel and unusual punishment.
