Gun Sales Tax Holiday Bill Wins Shroud Award

Legislation that would have created a state sales tax holiday for guns and ammunition purchases has won the Shroud Award for the “deadest” house bill of the 2014 legislative session.

The Shroud Award – a black suit mounted on cardboard – is a good-natured tradition in the Alabama House of Representatives given on the final night of the legislative session. Lawmakers refer to the award winner as the “deadest” bill in a resolution.

Republican Rep. Becky Nordgren had proposed an annual Fourth of July weekend sales tax holiday for gun and ammunition purchases.

Runners-up included a bill to ban people under the age of 19 from riding in the back of pick-up trucks. A proposed $100 million bond issue to replace textbooks with electronics tablets was another contender.
