6 Weeks Until Mtgy. Co. School Board Election between Sellers, Keith

From Campaign 2014 — In just six weeks, Montgomery voters will head to the polls to vote for a candidate to represent District One on the Montgomery County School Board.

Lesa Keith, the whistle blower who exposed grade changing in Montgomery Public Schools is challenging the incumbent Heather Sellers, and says Sellers may be copying her campaign strategies.

Lesa Keith says her platform is ‘Say No to Status Quo,’ but says says her opponent Heather Sellers now has a similar platform.

“My platform is say no to status quo and my husband got on her website and I’m not saying that she’s the most creative person because she had to get that from my website. I don’t mean to say that, but where’d she get that? I said that.”

But Sellers says she didn’t take Keith’s platform slogan.

“I have always been someone that has worked hard in doing what’s right and I have always been one that has said no to status quo,” she says. “I’ve not been the status quo candidate ever.”

Although Keith says she is confident in her message, she admits facing Sellers will be a challenge.

“It’s do I have it. Do I have it in numbers when I’m competing against someone that has very much a political background,” she explains. “Heather is certainly more seasoned but I don’t know that her heart is in education. She ran for legislature and that didn’t work.”

But Sellers says she was still very much active on the school board while running for House District 74.

“I think that continuing education through legislature would have been a great platform for me to do that, having been on the board,” says Sellers. “I don’t see that as a problem.”

And both woman say they’re the better candidate.

“I think I have the capability, the passion, the want and I think Montgomery has a need for somebody like me,” says Keith.

“I am very vested, as I’ve said,” says Sellers. “Both of my children do attend public school and it’s something that I am passionate about.”

The election will be June 3rd. Stay with Alabama News Network as we feature other local races throughout campaign 2014.
