New Flight Program To Take Off At Troy

A major announcement in Troy today- a new partnership is creating the university’s first flight training program and potentially the first one of it’s kind for high school students in the country.Â
Â
Hawaii-based Mauna Loa helicopters is partnering with Troy University and the City of Troy to start a new flight training program. This is also a unique partnership with Pike County Schools.
Â
Because, students will be able to get their associates degree through the University, as well as their private pilot certificate and their high school diploma.Â
Â
Â
Troy University Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. said, “Now that there is declining emphasis in the military with the downsizing, I think that more of that burden will shift in terms of pilot preparation to the civilian community. So this program is needed and will be increasingly needed.”Â
Â
The program’s going to start small in the fall with two airplanes and three helicopters for about 40 university students and five high schoolers.
Â
University students will be able to earn their minor in aviation operations and will choose a helicopter or airplane emphasis earning a private pilot and commercial pilot certificate.Â
