Local Reaction to Alabama Lottery

The question of starting an Alabama lottery has been a big topic for years.
This election year, it’s coming back because some candidates for governor want to start a lottery.
In Tennessee, a lottery is providing enough money that the governor has just signed a law promising a free community college education to every student.
So could it work in Alabama?
We asked our Facebook fans for their comments on it.
Jessica Taylor says: “I think it is a great idea!! We are considering moving to SC for that same reason.
Amanda Pantaleone says: “Come on Alabama….the lottery would be great for the education system….that money could be used for so many much needed things dealing with education.”
Deuteronomy McKinley says: “Yeah, it could make it where I will be able pay full tuition for my kids to go anywhere they wanted & never worry about whether I would have a million dollar debt afterwards. I play anyway, why not here?”
Our comments we got were all supporting the lottery.
But Alabama voters have continued to vote it down every time it has come up.
Governor Bentley has stated he is not in favor of a lottery stating he
doesn’t think “gambling is the way to fund education.”
But it is not up to him to pass it.
Creating a lottery in Alabama requires an amendment to the state constitution.
The Alabama House and Senate must approve it first, and then the voters would have to pass it.
