Seven Candidates in the Running for Macon Co. Sheriff

We’re just four days away from the primary elections. Even with key offices up for grabs, primaries often have low voter turnouts, but some races could bring record numbers of people.

Macon County voters will have plenty of choices Tuesday. Seven people are running as Democrats for sheriff, but no Republicans. With the incumbent retiring, the field is open for some new faces.

“I really think there’s going to be tremendous turnout because of the historic exchange in this election. We have some key positions that are going to be up for grabs,” said Probate Judge Alfonza Menefee.

That includes sheriff, where there’s a crowded Democratic primary ballot, which poses a challenge for some voters.

“If you haven’t talked to them or the newcomers that we haven’t seen before, it is kind of difficult to choose,” said Tameatrice Hooks, a former VictoryLand employee, who says the sheriff’s position on working to re-open the casino will weigh on her casino.

“I just want him to go and talk to whoever he needs to talk to. they need to get a team and talk to the governor or whoever it is and let them know we really need that place open because they bring in a lot of revenue,” she said.

Other voters say that won’t make a difference to them. They want other changes.

“I think we have a decent chance of a turnout in macon county, but the thing I’m most worried about is will they come out and vote new people into office and change the course of Macon County instead of having the same old people who are running the town.”

The offices of Macon County Revenue Commissioner and District Court Judge are also up for grabs. Altogether, nine candidates are running for those offices.
