Last Minute Campaigning For Candidates Before Primaries

Candidates running in Alabama’s primary election are making last minute appeals to voters before the polls open tomorrow.

74 races in Alabama — and those candidates are vying for the seat that makes them a public servant in your area. But for some, the primaries are especially important because those winners will be the ones taking office.

Polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. There are 17 state races including the Governor’s, Lieutenant Governor’s and Secretary of State seats.

Political experts say this year’s voter turn out will be low because many candidates have no opposition — but they say it’s the other 57 local races that will make the difference including the Alabama House District 76 Democratic primary between incumbent Thad McClammy and Tracy Larkin.

“I believe that we have made our case today. We will try to follow up just in support of what we’ve done with our phone banks  and also to revisit some of the neighborhoods that are the larger neighborhoods to try to reacquaint ourselves at the 11th hour with voters,” Said Larkin.

McClammy says he’ll be knocking on doors, too. But instead of making phone calls, he says he’s staying plugged in.

“We have a lot of young people  and that’s what they do. loooking at the phone, they’re not accepting calls and making calls. They’re looking at facebook, they’re looking at twitter, they’re looking at this and the other. So yeah, that’s part of the game,” Said McClammy.

But some candidates are taking another approach: they’re showing campaign ads.

Sandy Toomer’s ad against House Speaker, Mike Hubbard, uses a former lobbyist for Auburn University to accuse Hubbard of profiting from insider knowledge in a contract with the university.

But however candidates choose to make the final sprint to the finish line, there’s one thing candidates want you to remember.

“We do hope that we get many more people coming out to vote in this election out tomorrow,” Said Larkin.

“It’s not a question of see who is going to be there in November. We already know who is going to be there in November. The race is over with,” Said McClammy.

You can call your county registrar’s office to find out where your polling place is located. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

That Democratic Primary for the State House seat in District 76 is just one example of a race that will be decided tomorrow because there are no republicans running.
