Closing Arguments Set in Alabama Abortion Trial

A judge in Montgomery is hearing closing arguments in a legal challenge of a new Alabama law requiring doctors at abortion clinics to have approval to admit patients to nearby hospitals.
  Â
American Civil Liberties Union attorney Alexa Kolbi-Molinas said Monday the law will close all but two of Alabama’s abortion clinics because they use out-of-state doctors who can’t get admitting privileges.
  Â
Alabama’s solicitor general, Andrew Brasher, says the traveling doctors haven’t tried to get admitting privileges and the clinics’ claims haven’t been proven.
  Â
The closing arguments continue Monday afternoon. U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson hasn’t indicated how soon he will rule.
  Â
Thompson has put the law on hold pending a ruling.
  Â
Mississippi, Wisconsin and Texas have similar laws, but Texas is the only state where it is being enforced.
