Ex-Guard Tried on Claims of Sexual Misconduct

An Elmore County jury is getting different stories about allegations of sexual misconduct on Alabama’s death row for women.

Former corrections officer Matthew Hall of Montgomery is charged with fondling and kissing a death row inmate at Tutwiler prison in 2011.

Both the 33-year-old Hall and the prisoner initially told investigators nothing had happened.

But the woman later gave prison investigators an 11-page statement detailing the alleged acts, and Hall gave a taped confession that jurors heard on Tuesday.

The defense now claims that statement was coerced. It’s asking jurors to acquit Hall.

Hall could himself be sent to prison if convicted on a felony charge of custodial sexual misconduct.
