East Alabama Insulation Plant Faces $41,800 Fine

A manufacturing plant in the eastern Alabama community of Phenix City is facing a $41,800 fine after federal authorities say it failed to protect workers from hazardous chemicals.

The U.S. Department of Labor on Tuesday announced that its Occupational Safety and Health Administration proposed the fine for separate violations stemming from a complaint in January at Industrial Insulation Group.

The agency said the plant’s management failed to properly protect workers from several caustic chemicals, including one which can be harmful to eyes, skin and kidneys.

The agency found that workers at the plant were not given a place to wash the chemical from their bodies.

The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/1lS54Ub) that Industrial Insulation Group, or IIG, is based in Brunswick, Georgia. The company did not return the newspaper’s calls Tuesday.
