State Won’t Reveal Caterer in Food Illness Probe

A state agency that hosted a luncheon that health officials suspect was the source of an E. coli outbreak won’t say who the caterer was.

Virginia Caples, administrator of the Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Program Unit of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, said the agency doesn’t want to damage anyone’s reputation.

The May 30 event was held at Bridge Builders International Church in Decatur. Officials said more than 300 attended.

The Decatur Daily reports that at least 19 people reported becoming ill after the event.

The extension service said in a statement Monday that it has been made aware of two complaints of food poisoning that were filed with the state Health Department.
