Tallapoosa Co. Republicans Want Sales Tax Increase Revoked

Republican leaders are trying to get the county commission to roll back a sales tax increase. They say the one percent increase commissioners approved back in May is hurting the county’s economy.

At a meeting this week, they drew up an official resolution, asking commissioners to take another vote and strike down the tax. Alexander City now has one of the highest sales taxes in the state at 10 percent.
“I was disappointed. We already pay a very high sales tax here. I know a lot of business people in town are very concerned about keeping people here locally and community leaders trying to bring more business and more retail,” said Denise Bates, the chair of the party in Tallapoosa County.
Other cities in the county and unincorporated parts of Tallapoosa County pay less. The commissioners voted on the sales tax increase to pay for improvements to county schools, which faced major budget shortfalls.
Some store owners say they haven’t noticed a difference since the tax went into effect two months ago.
“You know, the question it, but I really think the dust has settled, and people have gone about their business and really don’t think about it much anymore,” said Sarah Neighbors, who owns Cloud Nine on Main Street.
This resolution by the party doesn’t really have an impact on the commissioners’ vote. They would have to choose to take this issue up again at a future meeting.
