Gov. Bentley ‘Frustrated’ With No Budget At End of Session

It’s the last day of the special session.Â
Â
It’s estimated to have cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Governor Bentley says he’s frustrated that lawmakers failed to do their one job. He says when he called this special session lawmakers had plenty of time to get things done. But, they chose to break for three weeks. The house rejected the senate’s budget and ended the last day of the session with no general fund budget. The senate proposed steep cuts from things like Medicaid and law enforcement. But, the governor says these cuts would be too drastic.Â
Â
Governor Robert Bentley said, “I have been the only one that’s been consistent wih really a plan that works. I hear all these other plans, gambling was thrown into the mix and of course that diverted everyone’s thinking. And everyone thought well that’s the easy way out we won’t have to vote on taxes. We are going to have to vote on taxes. That’s what we are going to have to have. We are going to have some increase, fair taxes in this state to solve this problem.”
The governor will call another session. He didn’t say when, but he says he’ll give lawmakers some time to work in the coming weeks and call them back.Â

The clock is ticking to have a budget passed by the fiscal year starting October 1st.Â
