A Civil Rights Pioneer is laid to rest. The family of Julian Bond held a private ceremony in Florida.

But fellow colleagues and community members gathered in Montgomery to celebrate his life.

About 100 people gathered at the Civil Rights Memorial to celebrate Bond’s life. Bond dedicated about two thirds of his life to the fight for equal rights- Holding the top post at the NAACP and acting as the Southern Poverty Law Center’s first president were just two of his many titles.

Roses petals were spread across the civil rights memorial at the same time his ashes were scattered in the Gulf of Mexico. A tribute to a man that friends say- was always looking ahead.

Joe Levin, Co-Funder, General Counsel SPLC said, “He never thought that the movement for justice was ever over. And that’s what I want people to take away. It’s not over, it continues that’s the whole point of the Civil Rights Memorial and quite frankly that was the point of Julian’s life. And to honor his life we need to recognize that continue our work.”

Bond also served in the Georgia House of Representatives and state Senate for nearly 20 years. He was 75 years old.
