Gov. Robert Bentley joins the late Gov. George Wallace as recent Alabama governors faced with divorce while in office.
In 1978, then-First Lady Cornelia Wallace moved out of the Governor’s Mansion in Montgomery and divorced the governor.
The Wallaces had been married about seven years. But at the end, there were accusations of infidelity and telephone bugging. Mrs. Wallace later moved to Florida to be with her sons from her first marriage.
Gov. Wallace married for a third time in the 1980s, but that too, ended in divorce. His first wife, Gov. Lurleen Wallace, died of cancer while in office in 1968.
