Ford Plans to Introduce Lottery Bill in Special Session

House Minority Leader Rep. Craig Ford (D-Gadsden) says he plans to introduce a lottery bill during the special session of the Legislature.

In a statement, Ford says, “There aren’t a whole lot of good things anyone can say about what’s been going on in Montgomery lately. The legislature has failed to pass a budget-twice! Next week, legislators return to Montgomery for a third legislative session to address the budget crisis, but there is still no agreement on any solution.”

“But despite all of this, there is one area where some progress has been made: support among legislators for a state lottery,” he said.

Ford says that a lottery would protect education.

Gov. Robert Bentley called a second special session to start September 8 to pass a general fund budget. The 2015 regular session ended when Bentley vetoed a spending plan that would have cut $200 million from state agencies. Those agencies are currently operating without a budget for the 2016 fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.
