Proposed Specialty Boat Tags to Raise Millions for State Parks

Budget cuts threaten Alabama state parks.
The new budget going into effect October 1st cuts up to one million dollars.
And two lawmakers announce their plan to help make up for the cut.Â
Â
Senator Gerald Dial and Representative Margie Wilcox are two lawmakers on the license plate oversight committee. They’ve seen the popularity of specialty tags. So they thought, ‘why not offer them for boats?’ Boat owners would pay $50 for the specialty tag. Just like for cars they would represent organizations like your favorite university. Thirty dollars would go towards the organization, $20 would go towards the maintenance of state parks.Â
Â
Sen. Gerald Dial said, “we only reduced their operation costs by a million dollars which is a lot of money but I talked to conservation and I feel like they won’t be closing any parks but this will give them a steady stream of revenue to help replace that million dollars we took and then give them some more.”
Â
They estimate this could raise about $5 million each year for state parks. Â This will be brought before the license plate committee next month and they hope to get it through the legislature and start producing the tags as early as May.Â
