“You know, it’s a way to integrate IT into the schools, so it’s about kids that are used to playing video games or on computers, or on iPads and devices,” says Charisse Stokes, Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association Education Foundation Director, “It’s actually bringing those academics into systems they use each day.”

The Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association, awarded four schools more than $9,000 in grant money. The money will be used to buy computers for the school labs and classrooms. The students have been using educational computer games to learn math and science skills.

“We’re very excited to be getting this money right now,” says Carr Middle School Principal Brittany Aarestad. “All this money is going to go back into our technology. Our computer labs definitely need several computers that we are excited about purchasing for our schools.”

“The state has yet to fund books for a very long time,” says Brewbaker Middle School Principal Cameron Whitlow. “So being able to find additional resources to buy learning opportunities is key.”

The principals say the kids are excited to get new equipment. They say the old computers just could not keep up with the kids’ education.

“They were concerned about the computers going down in the computer lab,” Whitlow recalls. “They didn’t get the opportunity to finish an assessment they were working on. This will definitely be able to replace some things that are not up to speed or kind of outdated. And so they are very excited about this.”

The money will be split between the four schools, depending on what each school needs. Carr, Brewbaker and Booker T. Washington will use the money to buy 40 new computers. Wilson Elementary will use the money to buy new science kits.
