ROCK BOTTOM AMERICAN PUB

Smoke detectors save lives. That’s the message of the American Red Cross’ home fire campaign. And today the Red Cross teamed up with Montgomery Fire and Rescue for a fundraiser to get their message to the public.

Red cross workers and firefighters were selling 10 dollar spaghetti lunches at Rock Bottom American Pub. Proceeds go towards the Red Cross buying smoke detectors for local families who do not have them. They’ve installed about 400 smoke detectors this past year and officials estimate they’ve saved at least 35 lives. Red Cross workers also help families come up with evacuation plans.

Terri Mason, lead event specialist American Red Cross said, “We practice fire drills at work and at school but most people don’t practice them at home and it’s so important to practice that with your children and come up with an evacuation plan. And also have working smoke alarms in your home. Because once a smoke alarm goes off you have about 2 minutes to evacuate and if your smoke alarm is not working of you do not have one, that time is cut in half.”

Fire crews say you should make sure your smoke detectors aren’t on the ceiling, but about a foot from the top of the wall.
That’s because gasses can push the smoke down.
