Statistics show nearly 900,000 Alabamians live in poverty, making the state the seventh poorest state in the country.Organizations like the Montgomery Food Bank want to help change that, by helping families in the capital city.
The mobile food pantry program is the food bank’s second largest distribution program.
The pantries reach people across the state… Including children, seniors, working poor families… And victims of domestic violence.
Poverty is an ongoing problem in the state.
And often times families in need have to make tough choices when it comes to living day-to-day.
“We have so many people here in Montgomery who cannot afford to buy their own groceries. They have to choose between groceries or medication, maybe co pays or something at the doctor’s office.” Says Addrene Thomas, a volunteer for Faith Crusaders Rescue Mission.
The Montgomery area food bank helps feed people in 35 of Alabama’s 67 counties.
