With Christmas just a few days away, people across the country are getting ready to do some last minute shopping. Retailers say stores will be busy as ever, especially when it comes to getting the perfect gift for a loved one.
While holiday shopping may be over for some, others are just getting started. According to surveys one in every six holiday shoppers wait until the last minute to shop. That has businesses at East Chase Mall bracing for a busy week ahead. Alabama Retailers Association says more than 40 percent of shoppers in Alabama wait to do their shopping at the last minute. For some shoppers the reason could be procrastination, but for others there’s a strategy to shopping at the last minute.
“There are some people holding out until the last minute to get the best deals, and if those people are waiting for that this year there’s a lot of reason to celebrate”, says Melissa Warnke of the Alabama Retailers Association.
One of the most popular gifts for last minute shoppers is gift cards.
According to Starbucks they sold over two million gift cards just on Christmas eve last year.
