Is Elmore County’s Containment Law Working?

Humane Societies often see an influx of puppies this time of year from litters that didn’t sell during the holidays. Even with the additions, Elmore County has seen a drop in intake.

Rescuers hope it’s a sign new enforcement in the county is working. A few years ago the county enacted a containment law like many surrounding counties. The law makes it a finable offense to let your animal roam free. In the past two years, Elmore County Humane Society’s intake is down by more than 600 pets.

Executive Director Rea Cord said, “If there’s less strays, there’s less getting brought in to us and if they are staying at home maybe perhaps they are not out there getting pregnant or making babies and causing more litters. So maybe more people being responsible.”

Part of being a responsible pet owner is making sure your animal is identifiable. Make sure they have proper id, so they may be reunited before ending up at the shelter.
