It’s been almost one year since the city of Montgomery swore in it’s fourteenth police chief. With the change in leadership, is the city any safer?
Montgomery Police Chief Ernest Finley says things are moving in the right direction. Crime’s down about 7 percent from last year, but there’s a slight uptick in homicides. The year 2015 saw 39 and the majority of those were the victim knew the suspect. That’s why the chief says communication is the keyword for 2016- getting into schools, talking about how to walk away from violence and drugs.
Chief Finley said, “The reality is there’s a lot of mistrust but when you have that one on one, face to face interaction with anybody, it kind of breaks those barriers when you look a man/woman in the eye you let them know that you care. You are concerned about their issues and concerns on their block, community. It makes a difference.”
Homicides were up slightly this year, but drastically down from 2013 when the city recorded 50 homicides.
