Less than a quarter of registered voters voted in the last presidential primary.  The Secretary of State says his office is working to make sure every one eligible casts a ballot, even though this process comes with a hefty price tag. It costs about $4 million for a primary. You must select a party, and if there’s a runoff you can’t swap parties to vote, that’s called crossover voting.
John Merrill, Secretary of State said, “The thing that our citizens need to remember- if the democrat or republican party decided to change their party rules and not have a primary election they could simply select who the candidates are that would have the nomination for that particular party. Assign them a ballot position and then they would represent that party on the ballot in the fall.”
You must pick a party during the primary, but once we get to November you can go up and down the ballot voting for which ever candidate you please.
