U.S. Senate, Congress Races Heat Up

Three weeks away from the Alabama primary election and the candidates are campaigns are in full swing.

Longtime Incumbents are facing some opposition this year as the primary gets closer.
U. S. Senator Richard Shelby has been in office for nearly 30 years. Congresswoman Martha Roby is in her 6th year. They each have opponents. But how hard is it to beat an incumbent?
Political analyst Steve Flowers says it is difficult.

“Between 91 and 95 percent of all Congress people are reelected. The reason is they garner all the campaign money. They spent years getting to know their constituents. Martha Roby has now been in that office for 6 years, so it’s a pretty big challenge to defeat an incumbent Congress person,” said Flowers.
Flowers also says Richard Shelby is one of the five most powerful members of the U.S. Senate.
