The ongoing legal battles in the race for Elmore County Superintendent may be over for now. A judge has ruled that incumbent Andre Harrison may run as an independent in the race.
This latest issue brought before Judge Reynolds was whether or not Harrison could run as an independent because of what’s known as the “sore loser” law. That essentially stops a person from running as an independent just because they lost in the primary.
Prattville’s principal Richard Dennis is the republican candidate in the race. His attorney argued today that Harrison should not be allowed to run as an independent. Harrison’s attorney says the “sore loser” law doesn’t apply, because he was disqualified as a republican candidate months before the March 1st primary.
James Anderson, Dr. Harrison’s Attorney said, “Dr. Harrison is qualified to be an independent candidate. He’s presented over 2,000 signatures. He only needed over 600. And so the people of Elmore County are going to support him in that position.”
Richard Dennis, candidate for superintendent said, “Excited to get to the next phase of this campaign and continue to move on and get past March 1. Anticipate planning for the November election.”
This ruling doesn’t impact the primary on March 1st. Dennis and Harrison’s names will be on the ballot for voters in November.
