A “Black Lives Matter” protest started in west Montgomery Monday afternoon on the corner of Fairview Avenue and Oak Street. Several members of the black community held signs calling out for justice for shooting victim Greg Gunn.
Jamel Brown organized the event. He says he wants to show the rest of the country and world that uniting together doesn’t have to come with violence.
“We can as black men, black men and black girls, black women and black boys can come together in peace without tearing down our neighborhood,” said Brown.
Brown says the two main things they need are truth and justice.
And they want to be treated fairly.
“We want to look at police officers as our friends. But we don’t want big SUV’s riding through our neighborhood with about 10 of them on there… coming through our neighborhood harassing folks on their porch. We’re human, too. Can we get a little respect and dignity also? Because our lives do matter also,” said Brown.
The group plans to camp out at the site and hold protests throughout the week.
