FETALHEARTBEATPeople packed one of the state house’s largest committee rooms to have their say on the fetal heartbeat bill.

Senator Gerald Allen is sponsoring the bill to prevent any abortions once a doctor finds a heartbeat, which could be as early as 6 weeks.

“As a nation we’ve come to learn more about what’s taking place in the womb. That child is a living human being, a child who feels pain. It’s a fascinating creation, and to know that the first amendment, in my opinion, protects that child,” said Sen. Allen.

But there was a lot of opposition. Most of the speakers came out against the bill, saying it violates a woman’s rights.

One of those opponents was Elizabeth Graham.

“I’m a retired lawyer, and I follow these cases when they come into the Alabama Legislature. This bill is a blatantly unconstitutional bill. Similar bills in north dakota and arkansas have already been enacted and struck down,” said Graham.

Earlier this year the supreme court upheld a lower court’s decision, refusing to let the state enforce the law.

Even with a guaranteed court case, Senator Allen says this is the right thing to do.

“Listen, that shouldn’t even be a question mark as far as cost. The life of 57 million babies that have been aborted since 1973, it’s unbelievable, and this nation should be ashamed of itself,” said Sen. Allen.

“It’s very frustrating. Each year when the legislature convenes I say a prayer that they will not enact any stupid bills that are not supported by science. I’m afraid my prayers won’t be answered this year,” said Graham.
