Rep. Mac McCutcheon from Huntsville proposed a six cent per gallon tax. He says there would be an option for the legislature to re-evaluate it every few years and raise it as needed.
McCutcheon says the revenue will go to construction for Alabama roadways and keep the state competitive with bordering states.
“There is no way we can compete and keep up our infrastructure in Alabama on 1992 gas prices. We must address this problem and try to fix it,” said McCutcheon.
People we talked to seem to be in favor of the bill.
“I’m generally opposed to taxes, however our roads do need work; our bridges do need work. Six cents a gallon, I don’t think would kill anybody,” said Steve Coleman.
“I’d be more in favor of something like that if I knew the legislators would actually use it for what they say they are going to use it for,” said Chet Moeller.
Akelia jones agrees.
“If it’s for a good cause, then yes. But if it’s not going to help the community or anything like that, then no ma’am,” said Jones.
This bill will now head to the house transportation committee for review.
