Last week, Governor Bentley signed a bill putting the brakes on Montgomery’s use of speed cameras come June 1st.  Mayor Todd Strange says, not so fast.

He says the automated enforcement cameras aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. He says their use is protected under a section in the constitution that states legislators can’t enact a statute that would impair an existing contract. Strange says there are three years left on the contract with the automated photo ticket system.

Todd Strange, Montgomery Mayor said, “It repealed the permissive side of the equation. But based on our obligation to enforce the laws, they don’t tell us whether we can use cars or motorcycles. They don’t tell us whether we can use guns, tasers, or batons or things like that. That’s just parcel of all of the tools.”

Mayor Strange says the cars will no longer be used in construction zones. They will be used in neighborhoods and school zones where they are requested. And the mayor says they are inundated with requests for speed enforcement.
