The League of American Bicyclists ranks Alabama as the least bicycle friendly state in the country. Laws, infrastructure and education are just a few of the reasons. And some cyclists say they are reminded of that low ranking every time their tires hit the pavement.
Jordan Rayman was sent to the hospital after a car hit his bike’s handle bars while riding in Pike Road. He says he’s lucky to only have scraps and bruises. But, the lady behind the wheel kept driving, stopped a ways ahead to pick up pieces of her car than kept going. Cyclists say this type of close call happens too often.
Rick Dunaway, River City Triathlon Club said, “If we take away the law part of this, it’s just common courtesy. If you give us 3 feet of leeway on the roadway, or give us a three foot buffer, that pretty much allows us to do everything we need to do to safely ride our bicycles on the roadway.”
Jordan Rayman, cycling for three years said, “We’ve got families to come home to and we are just out here trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and have fun while doing it.”
A state trooper did respond to Jordan’s accident, that investigation continues.
