Tigers’ Anfernee Grier named to All-SEC, Defensive teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (auburntigers.com) – Auburn junior outfielder Anfernee Grier was named to the All-SEC second team and the All-Defensive team the league office announced Monday.

“I’ve been impressed with Anfernee since day one,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said. “How hard he worked in every rep that he took. For him to have such a great junior year is really special. He is one of the most well-rounded student-athletes I have ever worked with. He excelled as a defender, a runner and a hitter. Most of all, Anfernee represented Auburn University in a first-class manner. I’m really happy for him to receive this recognition.”

Grier batted .366 on the season with 12 home runs and 41 RBI. He finished the regular season ranked among the SEC leaders in average (4th), hits (87, 2nd), runs (56, 1st), homers (2nd), stolen bases (19, 7th) and total bases (137, 1st).

Grier homered four times with 17 RBI and five stolen bases in conference play. Additionally, Grier continued the stellar defensive play in center field he had come to be known for over his career.

Grier was named a preseason All-SEC first team selection in February. Through three seasons, Grier has recorded 207 hits with 58 extra-base hits, 72 hits and 35 stolen bases.
