Charles Henderson Health Center Participates in “Reach Out and Read”

Pediatricians at Charles Henderson’s Child Health Center in Troy are making sure kids start reading at an early age.

The center participated in their annual reach out and read event this morning. Children were read different books by several people including  by Representative Alan Booth. The program is part of “Reach Out and Read” Alabama’s initiative for pediatricians. Patients attending the health center walked out with a free book…as a thank you for participating.  Coordinators say they also share with parents the importance of early reading skills in children, during reach out and read..

“there’s a lot of nerve connections that go on even before the child can start speaking and speaking and reading with children is very important to their development so it’s a positive way for us to hand the child a book. the child smiles and enjoys it,” Dr. Elizabeth Dawson.

Reach Out and Read Alabama has helped pediatricians give over 1.6 million books to children.
