Biscuits swipe 4th straight from Smokies with 5-3 win
KODAK, Tenn. (biscuitsbaseball) – The Biscuits won their fourth-straight game for the fifth time this season, defeating the Tennessee Smokies again by a score of 5-3 on Monday night at Smokies Stadium in Kodak.
Chris Kirsch (6-5) was on the mound for Montgomery and the left-hander impressed once again going seven shutout innings before finally surrendering a pair of runs in the eighth on his way to his sixth victory. The southpaw would finish the night going 7.1 innings and allowing those two runs on just six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
The Biscuits provided Kirsch with all the run support he would need by scoring four times in the second inning thanks to a two-run home run by Justin Williams, an error by Smokies second baseman Ian Happ, and a Willy Adams RBI-single all off Tennessee starter Brad Markey (6-7). Justin Williams has now hit the same amount of home runs (4) in 18 games with the Biscuits as he did in three-and-a-half months at A+ Charlotte.
The Biscuits would add an insurance run in the eighth on a base hit up the middle by Kean Wong, before Tennessee finally ended Kirsch’s shutout bid with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the same inning. In the ninth, after coming on to rescue Kirsch in the eighth, Kyle Winkler allowed a leadoff solo home run to Ben Carhart and a double to Lane Adams, but retired three in a row to end the game including back-to-back strikeouts of Gioskar Amaya and Carlos Penalver to earn his seventh save.
The Biscuits are now 59-55 and will try to make it a clean sweep of the Smokies and win their fifth game in a row for the first time this season on Tuesday night when Yonny Chirinos (4-1) faces Zach Hedges (0-1) at 7:05 PM.
