Senior Alliance Calls for a State Lottery in Alabama

AP_1211281736Next week, lawmakers will return to Montgomery to begin a special session called to debate the creation of a state lottery.  When they do,  there’s one group of Alabama voters hoping that a lottery becomes reality.

Today, representatives of the American Senior Alliance held a press conference in Montgomery to show their support for the creation of a state lottery.  They believe the money it would generate is critical to continued well being of the state’s senior citizens.

Members of the Alliance say the ongoing budget crisis in Alabama has placed critical services for seniors in danger.  This includes Alabama’s Medicaid budget which is in a severe crunch.  They point to several studies that show a lottery in the state could generate in excess of $300 million per year.  Members believe it’s time for lawmakers to act and the let the people of Alabama decide if they want a lottery.

“We are asking the Alabama legislature to act now and let us vote.  Ladies and gentleman we have kicked that can down the road one too many times to the bitter end.  The problems in our state our complex, but the answer in this case is very simple,” said Conwell Hooper, spokesman for the American Senior Alliance.

The American Senior Alliance is a non-profit group that advocates on behalf of seniors.

The special session of the legislature is schedule to begin debating a state lottery on August 15th.
