Alabama Buyers Will Soon Pay More on Amazon

AP_523409132592Alabama residents will soon be paying more for purchases made on the website Amazon.

Buyers will see an additional 8 percent added to their purchases beginning Nov. 1 because the massive online retailer has agreed to start collecting and remitting sales tax in Alabama.

Amazon is the latest retailer to participate in Alabama’s Simplified Use Tax Remittance Program which allows eligible retailers to pay a flat 8 percent tax instead of keeping up with variances among state and local sales rates.

The change will mean a revenue boost for the state.

The majority of the revenue from the tax will go to the state’s general fund. The remainder will be distributed to cities and counties based on population.
