Darrio Melton Will Become Selma’s Next Mayor

State Rep. Darrio Melton will be giving up his seat in the Legislature in order to lead the city of Selma. He beat James Perkins, Jr. in the runoff for the mayor’s position.

Perkins, who was Selma’s first black mayor, had been trying to mount a political comeback. He and Melton beat incumbent Mayor George Evans in the August election before the two faced off in the runoff.
