Hurricane evacuees arrive in the River Region

The Dierking family is taking an unplanned vacation to Montgomery this weekend.  They had to evacuate their home in Jacksonville, Florida as Hurricane Matthew approaches.

The family of six lives close to the beach and knew they had to go.

“We’ve been through storms before but we knew that this was going to be something like we’d never been through before and we felt that it was best to get out while we could,” explained Stefanie Dierking

The city of Montgomery is working to help people fleeing the storm.  They’ve created a page on their website with available hotel rooms.

Mayor Todd Strange says the city welcomes these families with open arms.

“We expect this weekend to have a few hundred people come to Montgomery and other places in central Alabama to flee out of the wind and the rain.”
