Filling Troy’s District 5 Council Seat

Troy City Council’s District 5 seat remains empty after the death of former Councilwoman Dejerilyn Henderson.

It has residents wondering what’s next. Officials say after the new council is sworn in they have 60 days to appoint someone for the job and it’s in that time their vote counts versus those living in District 5. If the council doesn’t appoint someone within that period. The governor then has 90 days to appoint someone to the seat.

“That’s their decision but they can have input. That’s the good thing about democracy, especially at the local level. They can talk to those council members and have input into that decision, says Troy City Clerk Alton Starling.

If there is no decision made by the governor, the Pike County Probate Judge can call a special election to fill the seat’s vacancy.
