Ballot Features Confusing Amendments

As votes are cast on election day, a very small portion of the ballot deals with the presidential election dominating the headlines.

14 amendments covering everything from state parks to impeachment procedures are all on there as well.

But if the polling station is the first place you’re reading them, you could easily get confused…

I wanted to see if anyone could make sense of amendment 14, one of the wordiest of the bunch this year.

The amendment is aimed at fixing a legislative procedure. Lawmakers are supposed to pass the budgets first each year, but they can cover other bills if they pass what’s called a budget isolation resolution.

Currently, there are many laws across the state in jeopardy because the legislature was doing that wrong.

A vote for amendment 14 should help change that, but it’s hard to tell at first glance.

“Someone would probably need help, especially the elderly, even myself. You need help if you didn’t understand or know what section 71.01 says and what amendment 448 means,” said Lillie Franklin.

“That’s a major problem! My wife and I mentioned that last night. That’s the thing we’re not comfortable with, besides the craziness of the election,” said Jason Heuermann.
