Mixed Reactions As Jeff Sessions Tapped For Attorney General
U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions has been appointed to serve as President Elect Donald Trump’s Attorney General.
The announcement came Friday morning, along with several other cabinet announcements.
Senator Jeff Sessions has served in that office for the better part of 20 years.
He was also the first US Senator to back Donald Trump on the campaign trial.
That’s something that impressed Perry Hooper Jr, who went to the RNC as a delegate for Trump.
“I think he was the only united states senator that jumped out there. You’ve got to admire the man for doing that. But like I mentioned, he’s a principled conservative. He saw where the country was going in the wrong direction,” said Hooper.
Besides his legislative background, Sessions held several top positions in the Alabama.
Hooper says those make him more than qualified for the job.
“He’s a prior united states attorney, he was probably the best attorney general in Alabama. I used to handle his anti-crime bills when I was in the legislature,” said Hooper.
But not everyone in the state is on board.
Richard Cohen at the Southern Poverty Law Center has come out in opposition to Session’s appointment.
He released a statement saying Sessions was helpful to the organization when he was U.S. Attorney, but quote “Senator Sessions not only has been a leading opponent of sensible, comprehensive immigration reform, he has associated with anti-immigrant groups we consider to be deeply racist, including the Federation for American Immigration Reform and the Center for Security Policy.”
