Alabama Electoral College Voters Stay True To Trump
All nine electors voted for Donald Trump for president and Mike Pence for Vice President.
Political analyst Steve Flowers says that’s exactly what he expected from a state that overwhelmingly supported Trump.
“It was a very elegant ceremony. It was a coronation, there were no surprises. None of the 9 bolted,” said Flowers.
This was the first year that the state added some pomp and circumstance to it’s electoral college voting.
In addition to patriotic music accompanying the ceremony, Ben Franklin even showed up to give a brief civics lesson.
Secretary of State John Merrill says he wanted to add a little more to this year’s proceedings.
“Usually it’s the 9 electors and their spouses or guests and maybe one member of the media who knows it’s going on. We felt it was important to include high school students, college students, and any Alabamian who wanted to participate,” said Merrill.
There was some question whether all the votes across the country would be cast for Donald Trump.
Dozens of people protested outside the capitol, and each elector received emails and letters urging them to change their vote.
Some of the motivation surrounds the Russian hacks that impacted this year’s election cycle.
“I got thousands of emails, most of them from California, Chicago, and Miami. Just like Benjamin Franklin said earlier, this is a republic. We are set up so no huge big gigantic cities would control the presidency of the united states,” said delegate Perry Hooper Jr.
