Annual Count of the Homeless Conducted Tuesday Night
Volunteers with the Mid-Alabama Coalition for the Homeless canvassed streets across Montgomery Tuesday night in search of homeless residents. It was part of the annual homeless point-in-time count. Molly Stone says this census is a requirement to get funding to help serve the homeless community. It also helps the organization learn more about the homeless population.
“That helps us make sure that we’re connecting people with the right resources,” Stone explained.
In January 2016, the organization found over 800 homeless men, women and children living in Montgomery. That number includes people living on the streets or in shelters and housing programs.
Volunteers with the organization say this is an eye-opening experience for them.
“It humbles me because often times people don’t realize how blessed they are,” shared Ghandi Daniels, “how blessed you are to wake up in a home with a roof and water.”
Total numbers from the count will be released in the coming weeks.
