Pike County EMA Pushes for Mass Alert System
After a tornado ripped through Pike County Saturday, the county’s EMA officials want to install a a mass notification system.
The county’s sirens did not work properly Saturday morning. Officials say the sirens are repaired now. But to ensure the safety of residents in the future they want a mass alert system in place, in which people are alerted on their phones. Right now, the county has 18 sirens. Pike County EMA director Jeanna Barnes says they only reach about 18 miles of the county.
“There’s a big gap there we could be filling. So, we’ve been kind of in the exploratory stage where we are looking at options where we could serve the public better and utilize some modern technology to get that information out,” says Barnes.
Monday, the national weather service confirmed the tornado in Pike County as a EF0 – EF1. There were no reported injuries from that tornado.
